Small Mouth Bass Fishing

Experience the very finest Smallmouth bass fishing in the entire Northeast. South Branch Lake, being a warm water fishery, is ideally suited for smallmouth bass. The lake is dotted with numerous islands and countless submerged rocky shoals. The rock and gravel composition of the shoals and islands make ideal spawning sites for smallmouth bass. Bait fish and crayfish are abundant and supply the bass with adequate forage. Three to five pound smallmouth are common. We do practice catch and release to maintain this wonderful fishery. We have modern up to date equipment

Adventurous? Bring along one of our experienced guides to fish on the Penobscot, Piscataquis Rivers, or Seboeis Stream. Fish with the most experienced and well qualified river Smallmouth Guides in Maine. We use only the best when it comes to equipment and tackle, we are one of only a very few select places to carry Yamamoto Custom Baits, as well as AC Shiners. Our guides are prepared to supply all the fishing needs of our clients except fly fishing tackle although our clients are welcome to bring their own. The guides have been working out of our camp for twelve seasons, frequently on an every day basis.

South Branch Lake Guides

Registered Maine Guide, Owner/ Operator Russ Aldridge, having outfitted, hunted, and fished the New England States for over 30 years, is now settled into central Maine here at South Branch Lake Camps. We guide for smallmouth bass on South Branch Lake and the world famous Penobscot River as well as the Piscatiquis River. For hunting, we specialize in whitetail deer, bear, and moose. Over the years we have harvested some truly beautiful animals.

Clifton Ames is a Mid Coast Maine native who comes from a long line of sportsmen and has spent his life gaining hunting, fishing, and recreational experiences throughout the state.

During the 2005 fishing season Clifton subcontracted his services to South Branch Lake Camps as "first" fishing guide, offering trips on South Branch Lake, the Piscataquis River, and several area "stretches" of the Penobscot River.

Well three seasons and 4664 fish later, we are still happy to say that Clifton is a valuable member of the South Branch Lake Camps team. If you're a spincast or fly fisherman, Clif is happy to show you what you need to do to catch the "Big Ones." His "laid back" style and "it's your day" attitude make for a very fun and pleasurable experience.

Clifton has been a Registered Maine Guide since the early 90's and a Master Maine Guide since 2002. At 46 years of age, his experiences have included all types of hunting and fishing and past endorsements such as NRA Distinguished Expert Rifle Marksman, Certified Archery Instructor, Bow Hunter and Hunter Safety Instructor. Clifton has also recently received a U.S. Coast Guard Master Mate Captain's License rated for vessels up to 50 tons.

During Clifton's career as a guide, he has had the good fortune to provide a wide variety of services. Some of these are as follows: moose hunts, bear hunts over bait and with hounds, deer hunts, turkey hunts, rabbit hunts with his beagles, coon hunts with his blueticks, upland game birds, and ducks with his lab.

Whether your passion is hunting or fishing, Clifton is at home in the forest, fields and inland and coastal waters of the State of Maine, and he is happy to share his lifetime of knowledge and experiences with you and your family

We offer you a unique opportunity and a great outdoor experience. Fly fishing for our famous South Branch Lake small mouths, perch, and pickerel with or without our guides. Specializing in teaching new fly anglers, as well as enhancing the skills of the more seasoned angler, you will enjoy our laid back, friendly approach as you enjoy your developing skills as a fly fisherman.
