Maine Bear Hunting

Penobscot and Piscataquis County are known for high numbers of black bear and white tail deer and have enabled us at South Branch Lake Camps over the years to have access to substantial hunting grounds. Our fully guided black bear hunts starting in late August and lasting into September offer high quality hunting packages. We limit our hunts to only twelve hunters per week, which gives us the opportunity to spend quality time with each and every hunter. Our bear hunting packages include a Sunday to Sunday package with all meals, guide, lodging, linens, daily housekeeping services, transportation to and from bait sites and stands, and basic game care.

We maintain over 60 bait sites during the season, with tree stands, ground blinds, and two-person stands. Some handicapped access is also available. Baits suitable for bow hunters are also available. This allows for the rotation of the sites through the weeks and assures the hunter that he or she is on a fresh site each week. South Branch Lake Camps is a Maine State License Agent, which means we can provide the hunter with the necessary licenses and permits on site. Come join the South Branch Lake family that has scored black bear in the MASTC and state books for many, many years.

Be sure to bring along your fishing gear since South Branch Lake offers the number one smallmouth bass fishery in the state! Additional guests who may be non-hunters can fish at a special rate. Be sure to ask for details.

Hunting or Fishing
Whether your passion is hunting or fishing, our guides are at home in the forest, fields and inland and coastal waters of the State of Maine. They are happy to share lifetimes of knowledge and experiences with you and your family.

Deer Hunting
Penobscot County has some of the best deer hunting in Maine. Each year more deer are taken here than in any other county in the state. To give you an example, 2001 season three of the bucks taken were eight point or better and were over 200 pounds. Our success rate for the 2001 season was 32%. We start scouting in mid to late July and continue right into the end of rifle season. We scout out all areas in the 22,000 plus acres of wilderness around us.

Moose Hunting
Moose are also very plentiful in our area. In the past years we have managed several bulls with impressive racks. Our success rate so far has been 100%. We work out of zones 9, 10, 11 and 18. Black bear is also abundant and we offer fully guided hunts, with several state record book animals being taken in the past three years.

Rabbit Hunting
John Blaisdell's beagles have thousands of hours of actual hunting time and over five hundred rabbits/snowshoe hares to their credit.  John's combination of experience and excellent hunting pedigree give him a precision on the trail that is sure to provide you with an exciting and memorable hunt.
